Heritage in the Hinterland: Slocan – North Kootenay Lake Loop Tour

Explore the eclectic history of the West Kootenay. From the pit houses on the banks of the Slocan river, to the Japanese internment camps, and the sites of the Spirit Wrestlers, this tour takes you on a loop through the Silvery Slocan and along North Kootenay Lake. You will learn about the past and present of the Sinixt and Ktunaxa, and the unique waves of migrants who have inhabited the area over time. While some were forced and others were drawn, this field trip considers the stories of conflict and peace in this isolated mountain landscape. This field trip includes an option to soak at Ainsworth Hotsprings at the end of the day.

Food & Festivals – Ymir to Creston Tour

The day will start in Nelson with a brief visit with one of the coordinators of the Shambhala music festival who will give a slide show and overview of the festival. Then on to little tiny Ymir, where one of the creators of the Tiny Lights Festival (tiny but growing rapidly…) will give a tour and talk about the town that turns into a festival site each June.

Then on over the Kootenay Pass to Creston for several stops atlocal food producers such as the Wloka Farm Stand (a family run and all locally grown farm stand that is innovating how to grow food and be a important community centre for learning), and Kootenay Meadows (a family run organic milk and cheese operation that currently supports three generations of farmers), with a stop to have our bag lunch at Baillie Grohman (Grohman a winery that is set against the background of the Skimmerhorn Mountains).  A stop at the repurposed grain elevators will allow people to see how anything can have many successful uses, particularly in a small creative and hard working rural town like so many others across the country.
